Johnson Wagner claims final US Masters 2008 spot

The final open place in the 2008 US Masters was claimed on Sunday when rookie Texan golfer Johnson Wagner achieved the first PGA win of his career at the 2008 Houston Open, earning himself a million dollars and a ticket to the first major of the year.

The 2008 Houston Open saw an ominous return to form for Australian Geoff Ogilvy who had struggled with his game early in the season before coming back to win the WGC-CA Championships. Ogilvy tied for second place with Chad Campbell at the 2008 Houston Open, birdying the 18th hole on his final round.

Phil Mickelson’s performance at the 2008 Houston Open will be of concern to his fans, as the second best priced golfer in the 2008  US Masters odds table finished the tournament tied for 23rd place at 6 under par.

“I certainly wanted to play better, wanted to have a much better finish and hopefully a chance to win and contend," Mickelson said after the tournament. "So I was disappointed in that, but it gave me an opportunity to identify what areas of my game are weak heading into the Masters and where I need to spend time the next three days."
