Gary Player makes history at US Masters 2008

While all eyes are likely to be on Tiger Woods during the course of the 2008 US Masters, it is at the back of the field that US Masters history will be made by a 72 year old golfing legend.

Later today the South African Gary Player will tee off his 51st US Masters, setting the record for most ever appearances in the tournament at Augusta National golf course. Player had previously tied with Arnold Palmer on 50 US Masters appearances.

Gary Player first played in the US Masters in 1957, and since that occasion has missed the tournament only once. Player won the tournament three times in his life, taking the title in 1961, 1974 and 1978, earning himself a place in the field for each of the remaining years of his life.

Gary Player finished in the top ten of the US Masters tournament on fifteen occasions, placing him second behind Jack Nicklaus on the list of all-time best performers in this major. William Hill have Gary Player priced at 25,000 to 1 to win the 2008 US Masters.
