Day One: 2008 US Masters results

The 2008 US Masters results from the first day of action at Augusta National Golf Club are in. The day provided several surprises for the legions of golf pundits who had predicted that Tiger Woods would accelerate into a substantial early lead.

Instead of this being the case, Woods finished the first day of the 2008 US Masters on par, while Justin Rose shared an early lead with South Africa's Trevor Immelman, finishing the day with a score of 4 under.

In a day that saw most of the participating golfers struggle to come to terms with the Augusta National course, Rose put a bad start behind him to birdie six holes in succession and take the lead. Trevor Immelman moved to the top of the leaderboard with four birdies.

Justin Rose's performance on day one marks the third occasion in four years that the British player has led going into the second round of the US Masters.

In contrast Woods had to rely on an eagle to bring him down to par after bogeying two holes earlier on in the day.  Meanwhile Phil Mickelson, the second favourite for the tournament in US Masters betting markets, had a satisfactory day at the office, finishing one under par, a shot ahead of his biggest tournament rival.
