South African golfer, Trevor Immelman, had no idea how successful he would be on the PGA Tour when he turned professional in 1999. Five years later, having already joined the European Tour in 2001, Immelman not only captured the 2006 US Tour Rookie of the Year award, but he became the first rookie since Jerry Pate in 1976 to make the top-ten money list.

In 2003 he won his first European Tour title and together with Rory Sabbatini, took team South Africa to victory in the World Cup. He has made the top-twenty of the European Tour Order of Merit three times, and in 2004 he did his career resume the world of good by emulating the great Gary Player. He is the first man since Player in the 1970s to successfully defend the South African Open title.

Although he was winless on both tours in 2005, he did have his best-ever results at the US Masters. After a stellar performance, he finished tied fifth, and his good form and consistency continued. As a reward for his sterling efforts, he was chosen as the captain’s pick for the Presidents Cup, and consequently received a two-year PGA Tour exemption for 2006 and 2007.

His debut year on the PGA tour started slowly, but he hit form in April 2006, and by the end of the season he had accumulated seven top-ten finishes. To date Trevor Immelman, US Masters golfer, has earned over $4.5 million in his short career, and he is currently ranked 18th on the World Golf rankings.

The end to his debut year was like a dream. The 28-year-old took on the top two golfers in the world, and soon had the golfing fraternity and punters talking. At the Wachovia Championship he forced world number 2 Jim Furyk to a playoff, and then in the Cialis Western Open a week later, he held off Tiger Woods in the final round and finally claimed the biggest victory of his career, defeating the world no.1.

Given these achievements, it must be said that great things can be expected from the young man. Trevor Immelman, US Masters golfer? He knows how to win now and it will only be a matter of time before he is pulling on the Green Jacket or sipping from the Claret Jug! His best results to date are:

  • Masters – 5th in 2005
  • US Open – tied 21 in 2006
  • The Open – tied 15th in 2005
  • PGA Championship – tied 6th in 2007
